Submission Guidelines
Submission Guidelines for full-length session papers:
Papers should not have been published at the time of presentation. Full papers must be submitted for consideration. All submissions:
- Must be double-spaced, margins minimum of 1” on all sides, font size at least 12 points
- Must include a 150-word abstract
- Should not exceed 5,000 words, excluding the abstract and any figures, drawings, tables, and references.
- Should present no direct or indirect reference to the author or the author’s institutional affiliation.
- Must conform to one of the following style manuals: Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition, 2001), or The Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition, 2003).
- Must include a cover letter that provides the author’s name, email address, phone number, address, institutional affiliation, title of the paper, and the style manual used for the paper.
- The cover letter should briefly describe how the presentation relates to the theme, and the Key Question(s) addressed.
- Must contain one of the following statements:
- This paper is submitted for consideration as a session presentation, and publication in the Symposium Proceedings.
- This paper is submitted for consideration as a session presentation, but not for publication in the Symposium Proceedings.
- This paper is submitted for consideration for presentation BOTH as a session paper and the poster session
Accepted session presentation authors will have 30 minutes to present their papers, followed by a 15 minute discussion period.
Submission guidelines for poster session proposals:
Authors may submit full papers or 500-word abstracts for poster session proposals. Poster session papers should not have been published at the time of presentation. All submissions:
- Must be double-spaced, margins minimum of 1” on all sides, font size at least 12 points.
- Abstracts should not exceed 500 words, and full length paper submissions should not exceed 5,000 words (see full paper guidelines)
- Should present no direct or indirect reference to the author or the author’s institutional affiliation.
- Must include a cover letter that provides the author’s name, email address, phone number, address, institutional affiliation, title of the paper, and the style manual used for the paper.
- The cover letter should briefly describe how the presentation relates to the theme, and the Key Question(s) addressed.
- Must also contain the following statement: This abstract is submitted for consideration for presentation at the poster session. Poster abstracts will be published in the Symposium Proceedings.
Accepted poster session authors will attend the evening poster session at the symposium venue.
Submission guidelines for assessment strategy papers:
Assessment strategy papers are short papers describing successful assessment practices by K-12 music teachers. All submissions:
- Must be double-spaced, and of sufficient length to describe the assessment practice or strategy to make it replicable by other teachers. There is no word or page restriction, but most of these will not be longer than 1,000 words.
- Must include a cover letter that provides the presenter’s name, email address, phone number, and home address; and school name, location, address, phone, and fax number. The cover letter should briefly describe how the presentation relates to the theme, and the Key Question(s) addressed.
Presenters will have 30 minutes to present their strategies and 15 minute for discussion.
Submission guidelines for panel discussions:
- Must be less than 1,000 words, double-spaced, and (a) list the names and affililations of the panel discussants, (b) the focus or aims of the panel discussion, and (c) the key questions the panel will explore.
- Must include a cover letter that provides name, email address, phone number, and home address; and school name, location, address, phone, and fax number of the panel moderator and the panel members. The cover letter should briefly describe how the presentation relates to the theme, and the Key Question(s) addressed.
- All panel members must register for the symposium.
Submission format: All proposals should be submitted electronically via this website as a Word document (.doc) or PDF file (.pdf) to the Organizing Chair, Timothy S. Brophy. Follow the link below to proceed with electronic submission of your proposal.
Due date: Submissions must be received by midnight on October 1, 2008, and notifications will be made by November 15, 2008. Early submissions are encouraged.
Notification: All submissions will be reviewed by an expert panel of prominent music educators. All primary authors (or at least one author of multiple-authored papers) and all workshop leaders must register for and attend the Symposium.
