Opening Night Poolside Reception, Wednesday April 15, 2009, 6:00pm
Your registration includes an opening night poolside reception (weather permitting) after the last paper sessions are over and before the Poster Session. Come and mingle with the symposium participants by the Paramount’s beautiful pool, with a full view of Bivens Arm Lake and it’s resident gators (the reptilian variety). As you enjoy our beautiful Florida weather you will listen to the sounds of the Sunshine Steelers, the official Steel Drum Band of the University of Florida School of Music. This is not to be missed! (If it rains, we’ll move inside.)
The Sunshine Steelers. Directed by University of Florida Percussion professor Dr. Kenneth Broadway, the Sunshine Steelers were founded in 1998 through a collaborative effort of the UF School of Music, The Center for Latin American Studies, and UF Student Government. The ensemble presents two on-campus concerts every academic year, and performs for a variety of community and social functions. A smaller ensemble (Steely Pan) is also available for functions throughout the region. There are two large bands that rehearse each fall, and three large bands each spring. The top ensemble has performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and The Florida Music Educators In-Service Concert, as well as at numerous PAS Florida Days of Percussion.
Seafood Buffet Banquet, Thursday, April 16, 2009, 7:00pm
Florida is famous for its seafood, and the Paramount is famous for its Seafood Buffet. This Gainesville tradition will be accompanied by the Latin sounds of Jacaré Brazil, one of the University of Florida’s unique world music ensembles. Come and feast with the symposium attendees, network with friends and colleagues, and enjoy the great sounds of Brazil.
The banquet is $40.00 per person, and can be ordered at the time of registration or on site the first day of the conference (April 15, 2009).
Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks are not included in the banquet price, but will be available for purchase. The banquet includes water, iced tea, and coffee.
Jacaré Brazil. Founded in 1990 by Larry Crook, Jacaré Brazil is a UF School of Music ensemble devoted to Brazil’s rich musical heritage. With the addition of Welson Tremura as Co-Director in 2002, the group has quickly become the premiere ensemble of its kind in the United States. Consisting of percussionists, singers, and guitarists, Jacaré Brazil often collaborates with visiting Latin American musicians and gives numerous performances in the surrounding community and beyond exploring both popular and art music from all parts of Brazil.

Staying over Friday Night? Join us at the Ballyhoo Grill for dinner at 6:30pm!
For those who stay over Friday evening after the symposium is over, we are planning a group gathering at Gainesville’s Ballyhoo restaurant. A little bit of Key West right in Gainesville, wear your island gear and join us. You’ll be greeted by happy UF students and a VERY TALL gator at the front door, and listen to the music of Jimmy Buffet and other great island favorites as you dine on seafood, steaks, salads, and pastas.
The restaurant is a short cab ride from the hotel, and dinner is “on your own.” However, I’ll need to know if you’re going to attend in order to make arrangements with the restaurant in advance. We’ll take reservations when you check in for the symposium.
