General Information

Summer Professional Development Program for
Middle and High School Teachers of Chinese

Grades 6-12

With STARTALK funding, the University of Florida will hold an intensive 10-day training program for up to 25 secondary school teachers of Chinese. This residential program on the university campus is open to currently practicing teachers as well as prospective teachers from anywhere in the United States.

Participant Commitment:

Complete an intensive seminar on Chinese pedagogy and foreign language teaching methods.

Provide your own textbooks: Teaching Language in Context by Alice O. Hadley, and Integrated Chinese, Level 1 (main textbook).

Develop your own exercises for you middle- or high-school class as part of a teacher team.

Participate in a follow-up evaluation to share experiences in integrating STARTALK into your curriculum.

How to Apply:

Send us your one-page resume, a letter of interest, a letter of recommendation from your administrator, and the attached application form.

Credit Information:

Participants may earn a total of 4 credits in “Foreign Language Teaching Methods” and “Chinese Pedagogy.” Both courses (EDG 6905 & CHI 4930) meet the Florida State Board of Education requirements for certification in the teaching of foreign languages, and may be used for in-service credit or for degree credit.

Payment Information:

STARTALK pays 75% of the tuition, and fully covers lodging, lunches, and miscellaneous supplies. Accepted applicants will pay the remainder of the tuition cost through a registration fee of $250. They may apply to be reimbursed for travel expense and textbook purchase, up to $225.

Cancellation Policy:

There will be no refund of fees for those who withdraw from the program before completion.

Housing Information:

Housing will be in the Keys complex in same-sex 4-person apartments that have four bedrooms/baths and a common kitchen-living area. Linens (sheets and towels) will be provided but participants may want to bring a plate/bowl/glass/cup and some simple cookware. There are grocery stores nearby. There is a swimming pool at the complex.

Meeting Location and Transportation Information:

The STARTALK program will be held at the University of Florida College of Education, Norman Hall in Room 2329. There is a parking garage next to Norman Hall but available spaces will be limited, so carpool to Norman and arrive early (it's about a 20-minute walk from Keys). A parking decal will be required for all cars parked on campus and can be purchased through the registration process at a cost of $20.

Important Note:

You must be a legal resident of the U.S. to participate in STARTALK. We will accept practicing teachers as well as “potential teachers” who are not yet employed but plan to enter the profession by 2012.
